Pathways and TAFE Queensland

From the 2017 intake forwards the TAFE Queensland Schools programs will be managed using our Pathways platform. As part of the initial rollout Pathways will be used to solve a number of the core challenges of delivery TAFE qualifications for students still within a secondary school environment. This includes Pathways’ sophisticated pre-enrolment application and approval process with more than 600 schools, as well as providing schools with their own portal to manage students attending TAFE along with their attendance and progress reporting information.

It’s a game changer for the TAFE at Schools Program in TAFE Queensland and aligns perfectly with Pathways’ goal of providing the best tools to to manage secondary students in ALL of their non-school-curriculum activities.

Teacher Login is Live

One of the biggest requests in recent years has been to somehow provide select school teachers with read-only access to their own placements and classes, to promote more self-service of information requests and also give teachers huge vision into what’s happening with their own placements in real time. Less reports to run!

Where do I find a teacher’s login username and password?

Visit the school record in Pathways Cloud (from the top menu) then click on the teachers name on the right of the screen. You will see a username and password in BLUE ready for use.

Where is the Teacher Login Screen?

From the normal login screen click the yellow button labelled “Switch to Teacher Login”

Track Career Transition & Student Programs

Almost all of our education customers have programs they run that are not stricly students in the workplace, OR might be sub-programs that are very handy to track separately. Examples include mentoring programs, Workplace visits, Career and Transition Support services and the like.

A new tab has been added to the Student Details screen that allows you to record one or more programs against a student’s profile and track participation. The student custom lists function also now includes the program as a filter you can add if you making a BYO custom list also.

Custom Lists and Mail Merges

We have witnessed an explosion in the number of “custom lists” being built every day as coordinators uncover more and more uses for the Host, Student and Placement Custom List screens.

Custom lists are like a BYO reporting system on steroids and it’s great to see building their own perfect lists with just the right criteria and some very funny names to ensure they are recognisable. We see anything from “Tom’s Great Placements” to “Trouble is Brewing” to the more mundane like “2013 Term 4 Work Experience Placements for Followup. The sky is the limit.

One function that is dynamite from all the custom lists, however and could almost be the most important, yet subtle, feature in the entire app is the Mail Merge link at the top right of the custom list screens. Clicking this link allows you to bulk mail merge your documents to match the records shown on screen. This allows you to ad-hoc bulk merge just about anything using the exact criteria you need.

Coupled with the Excel Export function that gives you access to the raw data, there’s not much you can’t do really quickly with your student, host and placement information.

AusHEAL Congo Project

AusHEAL works in the DR Congo with Australian medical teams to heal the sick and train local Congolese doctors, nurses and support staff, while constantly developing the hospital infrastructure for long term sustainability. Australia has one general surgeon for every 10,000 people. DR Congo has one general surgeon for every 1,000,000 people. In one of the most dangerous and challenging places on earth, hope can be found because of the determined work of a small, dedicated group of Australians.

This is a shout out for a fantastic cause with some Australians helping some of the most vulnerable in the world.

Engage Students with Built-In SMS

One of the most direct and effective methods of communicating important, time sensitive information to a student is to send them a text message via SMS. Typically these are reminder-style message such as “Your placement is starting next week” or “Don’t forget to return your placement agreement” and the like.

Today we have launched built-in SMS functionality in Pathways. This allows you to send messages directly from the student information screen in a few clicks. As SMS messages are often similar we’ve built in an SMS template library so you can set up common messages and then send them with only a few clicks.

Better yet the individual sms sending is free.

Need to send bulk SMS to multiple students at once? Add an SMS package to your Pathways plan allowing you to send an sms to entire class or student list in seconds. Keep your eyes peeled in Pathways for the next few weeks as the rollout has already begun in alphabetical order. Sorry if your name starts with Z!

Pathways July 2013 Update Coming

We are very excited that our next major Pathways Cloud update has arrived.  When teachers and coordinators return their June/July holiday and log in for the first time the automatic update will have already done it’s great work and a tonne of new features will be ready to hit the road.

The biggest feature update this month is the addition of mail merge functionality to the custom list screens. Create a custom list of students, hosts or placements, and in addition to showing this list on screen as a dynamic report or exporting it to Excel, you can now mail merge to this list to any of your MS-Word based templates.

For example you could generate a work experience agreement for all placements in August with a specific teacher. Or generate an appreciation letter for all hosts that provided a work placement this year. The options are endless, and smoothly integrated with the powerful custom list screens. We think reports are oh so 1995, but when you absolutely must warm up the printer, custom lists + mail merges make it easy.

Here’s some great eye candy – chances are you may receive one of these post cards in the mail soon as part of our mid year promotion.

A Creative Endeavour

We are lucky to have the opportunity to be able to flex our creative muscles as well as the more nerdy technical skills, and each month we take on a few public web site projects that help people (eg. the AusHeal project coming up), have some creative outlet or are just plain fun. Avcair falls squarely into the fun category  – great people, awesome product, great sandwich’s during meetings. Let’s just say Avcair is not like long haul economy class…..

They do Jet Charter in Australia to just about everywhere in the world. So every time we do some work on their web projects we can imagine we are the lucky ones popping over to the Maldives for a few days on our own plane.
